Disabling Flash in Safari (Leopard)

Picture 5I admit it.  One of my biggest nemeses has got to be Adobe Flash.  It’s clunky, it’s weird, it’s slow.  It hogs system resources, and it’s everywhere!  Something like 80% of those dumb animation ads that you see on websites are made up of flash.  What would truly be ideal is if everybody just used javascript for animation, MPEG-4 for video, and small GIFs and JPEGs for ads.  Seriously.  Flash is awful. Any yet for all it’s flaws, flash does have some advantages.  It’s really easy to embed, you can have these nice easy-use-skins, and it’s also really easy to play in full-screen with those handy full-screen buttons.  So, what’s the solution?  Here it is, this great plug-in for your favorite web browser called Click To Flash which is just a quick download anyway.  How Click To Flash works, is it automatically blocks all flash content and replaces it with a subtle Click To Flash graphic, thus noticeably increasing your page rendering speed.

If you want to view the flash, then click on the graphic, the video or whatever loads up, and you’re good to go.  If it’s an ad or something, you can just leave it.  If you visit a site often, and you want to always view the flash content on it, you can also add that site to a whitelist to automatically display flash.  (That’s what I do for WordPress.com)  Overall, I think Click To Flash is a great piece of software to give your web browsing a boost and increase your productivity, while still giving you the capability to watch flash videos or use interactive flash animations.  Give it a shot!  Download (Click to Flash requires Mac OS 10.5 Leopard)
